Title: Trends in the Provision of Surgery by Rural Hospitals. Findings Brief (July 2011)
Abstract: This findings brief examines the provision of surgical services by rural hospitals over eight years (2001-2008) using the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Healthcare Cost Reporting Information System. It stratifies hospital surgical activity by location (i.e., metropolitan, micropolitan, or non-core based statistical area counties), by relative volume of surgical activity, and by Medicare Payment Classification (i.e., critical access hospital, rural prospective payment system hospital, rural referral center, sole community hospital, or transition hospital). The findings brief includes tables, a figure, and references.
