Abstract: This report examines prehospital emergency care services (EMS) used by rural residents for treatment and transport in the event of injuries or other health emergencies. It interviewed directors from all-volunteer rural services in 23 states, using a semi-structured interview format to encourage them to speculate on the future viability of their local service, describe the challenges they face, and the resources they need to ensure continuance. The report includes figures and references.
