Title: The Effect of Medicare Part D Plan Switching and Formulary Changes on Sole Community Pharmacies and the Patients They Serve
Abstract: This brief presents findings from a 2008 survey of 401 pharmacist-owners of sole community independent pharmacies about the effects that Medicare Part D prescription drug plan (PDP) beneficiary plan switching and changing formulary lists have had on their administrative burdens. It helps policy makers understand the importance of establishing rules requiring that beneficiaries receive information about the effect of PDP changes to avoid possible disruptions in a patient’s access to medications or loss of patients to plans with which the pharmacies do not contract; both of these factors ultimately affect the financial viability of sole community independent pharmacies and could result in a lack of consumer access due to pharmacy closure. The brief includes references.
